Bombs are explosives that appear as items in many game series. They are typically less destructive than in real life. Many instances are based on the stylized cherry bombs from cartoons.

Appearances[]

Canon appearances[]

Mario franchise[]

Bombs are relatively common in the Mario franchise. Enemies such as Bob-ombs and Bomb Boos are based on them. In some games, Bob-ombs turn into carriable bombs when their fuse is lit.

King Bob-omb is the leader of the Bob-ombs. Despite this, his behavior is closer to a Chuckya in his debut appearance.

The Legend of Zelda series[]

Bombs are a recurring item in nearly all games in The Legend of Zelda series. They allow Link to blow up walls and handily dispose of powerful enemies. They can be found in various places, but commonly require a Bomb Bag to store them.

Bomb Flowers are bomb-bearing plants that can be used as a substitute when the player has no Bomb Bag.

Across the series, Link can collect several other bomb-themed items. Bombchus are mobile bombs that travel in a straight line and may home in on enemies. Bomb Arrows are arrows that cause an explosion on impact. Remote Bombs can be detonated with the press of a button, typically the same button used to set one down, instead of exploding automatically.

Kirby series[]

In the Kirby series, Kirby can inhale bomb-themed enemies to get the Bomb or Crash Copy Ability.

There is also a block called the Bomb Block, which sets off a chain reaction when attacked. Despite the bomb imagery, these may create new blocks as well as destroy existing blocks. These are carried over into the Green Greens stage and some story modes in the Super Smash Bros. series.

Splatoon series[]

The Splatoon series features various bomb items, mainly as Sub Weapons and creating an explosion of ink. These include the Burst Bomb, Splat Bomb, Suction Bomb, Curling Bomb, Autobomb, and Fizzy Bomb.

Fanon appearances[]

Bombell series[]

Bombell, a fusion between a Bomb Boo and a Bob-omb, is the protagonist of the Bombell series.

The Legend of Zelda: Ghost Tracker[]

Bombs appeared in the third direct sequel to Wind Waker known as The Legend of Zelda: Ghost Tracker. They, like the previous games, can be produced with their action button before being thrown and carried until they explode per timer. They also had the ability when used in the boat to turn into a cannon, shooting bombs top destroy enemies and obstacles. The Standard Bomb Bag was obtained by Link in the cavern on Sailor's Cafe Island. Because of their cannon properties, they were required in order to reach Showflower Island, which was being attacked by an otherwise undefeatable Big Octo.

Contrary to popular belief, the Bombs are actually required in order to beat the game; although the Big Octo can be avoided by speed sailing past it, the cavern on Sandfall Island features one of the two keys needed to enter the Jungle Temple, and in turn the cavern is opened with Bombs, so therefor the Bombs are actually required to beat the game.
