Adventure Time Battle of the Kingdoms is an upcoming Real-Time Strategy Game for the Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo 3DS & Playstation Vita. It takes place in the Cartoon series, Adventure Time acting as a sort of parallel to the show in terms of it's Storyline. The game was inspired by the Mini-Series in the show "Elements" and draws aspects from that Mini-Series into its gameplay.

Story Mode

The Game's Story Mode is the main gameplay aspect of Battle of the Kingdoms and runs roughly in line with the cartoon's episodes with just about one-third of the episodes having a parallel to the Story Mode. Story Mode is told through a Book in-universe referred to as the Book of Heroes and details key plot points across the series filling in and summarizing most of the missing episodes and connecting plot points together.

In Story Mode the player re-enacts various battles from the show in the form of a Real-Time Strategy game as they are told in the book. The first couple of Battles introduce the player to the gameplay mechanics of the game acting as a tutorial of sorts. Later battles add more elements as well as situational based gameplay. It is recommended to new players of Real-Time Strategy Games to play Story Mode before going into online multiplayer, quick battles and other modes.

Story Mode splits up the battles into the seasons of the show, it goes by the original ordering of the seasons thus the changes regarding Seasons 7, 8 and 9 are ignored. The game releases each season freely with Seasons 1-3 being available from the start and Season 4-9 being released sequentially after a certain period of time. Each season contains 8-16 Quests in it where the player takes control of a specific leader and race to fight against another leader and race, a giant monster or something notably different. The game currently has a total of 90 Quests across the 8 confirmed Seasons.

Playable Characters

There are a large variety of playable characters in the game spanning across the show's numerous episodes. Some characters are available from the start whilst others need to be unlocked through various means. Aside from Finn & Jake all Playable Characters have a set Race they control with some characters sharing their controlled Race. Finn and Jake are able to use any unlocked character's race including defeated enemies whose race is not available to any unlockable character. There are a total of 44 Playable Characters, 5 available from the start while the rest are unlocked through the Story Mode.

Finn is a balanced Leader, he is one of the characters available from the start and is considered the most vanilla character in the game. He has no specialities towards any of the nine stats but also no hinderances. Finn is one of two characters capable of controlling any unlocked race, the other being Jake. The game recommends players learn to play Quick Battles as Finn initially due to his diversity in secondary traits and balance in primary traits.

Like Finn he is able to control any unlocked Race in the game.

Lemongrad III is one of the initial leaders available from the start of the game, he is described as a good character for new players due to his very high Production Rate as well as aggressive playstyle, he only controls the Lemon Race although this generally favours his playstyle. In addition Lemongrad III's stats tend to favour a unit rush method of playing.

Wildberry Princess is one of the characters that is initially playable from the beginning of the game, she controls the Wildberry Race and was the first initial character chosen for the game. Her strategy is an effective use of sustainment, Wildberry Princess' playstyle makes her one of the better Leaders in worse situations as her high Health, Production and Wealth allow her to keep up against attacks much better than other leaders, in general she is better for a slower win rather than rushing.

Ice King is a very specialized Leader, being one of the earliest to unlock he is a good demonstration of focused gameplay, it is fairly difficult to play offensively as Ice King, however defensively Ice King performs very well, he is often able to technologically outpace most other Leaders and his maxed Magicka allows his units and buildings to gain the full effects of their special traits, he also posesses fairly good Defence and Production in comparison to his below average stats and thus is able to endure most hits he is dealt.

Marceline is an unlockable character and fairly balanced overall with a slight tendency towards Magicka, she is one of two playable leaders that controls Demons under normal circumstances, her playstyle is much more affected by her starting terrain than other characters as her low Production and Gather Rates leave her in a tricky situation when not near resources that her Magicka can make use of.

Hunson Abadeer is an unlockable playable character, his playstyle heavily favours aggressive, almost nomadic play as a large amount of his stats are placed in Attack, Magicka and Knowledge. Hunson is usually one of the weakest characters in the early game although becomes noticeably more powerful as games go on, generally having good natural defences can help the player exploit Hunson's capabilities in the late game. Hunson, along with Marceline are one of two characters that control Demons.

Her playstyle is one of the strongest for large kingdoms as she has max Production and Gather allowing her to rapidly expand her territory. Her units and buildings also tend to be on the aggressive side as well making them good for maintaining territory in large numbers.

Gameplay

Gameplay of Battle of the Kingdoms uses the Real-Time Strategy formula. Players start out at random places on a map and must construct their kingdom and settlements while expanding their territory, gathering resources, building an army and taking over the other Kingdoms. The game has various resources which must be gathered as well as bonus resources which can yield strategic bonuses or act as Amenties. There are a variety of buildings that can and need to be built to expand the player's kingdom and research needs to be performed to unlocked new more powerful units as well as more useful buildings.

The main mechanic of the game is what's referred to as the Elements system, this dynamic territory control mechanic is what infleunces the territory players control. As territory is gained as lost the appearance, health and power is strucutres and units can vary with smaller Kingdoms having more powerful albeit more kamikaze-esque tactics whereas larger Kingdoms must build massive armies and defensive structures to overpower their opponents through numbers. Territories change dynamically and can prevent the construction of new buildings as well as cause a player to lose control of a resource, on the map these changes in the territory control can be viewed through arrow indicators showing which direction area of control is moving for which Kingdom.

There are 7 core resources the player must gather throughout the game to help them progress; Food, Water, Essence, Gold, Knowledge, Metal & Amenities. Aside from Amenities the others are gained naturally and spent freely when constructing new buildings and units. Food, Water and Essence are necessary for constructing new units whilst Essence, Gold and Metal are necessary for constructing new buildings. Knowledge is spent upgrading Buildings and Units as well as researching new uprades while Amenties are built to increase a Kingdom or Settlement's population limit.

Food is gathered from Farms and other Food-like structures and can be gained from exploring old Grocery Stores and Silos. Water can be gathered from Water Mills as well as Oceanic based structures in the later parts of the game, it can also be gained by exploring Wells and Waterfalls. Essence is gained from the terrain the player controls although there are structures that can be built to harvest more of it, there are no pre-built structures however that will give the player an Essence Bonus. Gold is collected from Workers and spent towards Units and Officials, it can also be acquired through mining as well as some additional means. Exploring Dungeons is an effective way to gain Gold and can be repeated much more quickly than other pre-existing structures. Knowledge is gained from various Knowledge gathering strucutres and can be gained from Wizard Outposts and Ancient Bookstores. Metal is gathered from Mines, Quarries and Fissures and can also be gathered in bursts from Junkyards and Bunkers. Lastly Amenities require the player to construct special buildings over Luxury Resources as well as specific buildings which permit the Luxury Resource to be acquired, in addition there are buildings that will create artificial Amenties although cost more and take longer to construct as well as not providing as much of a population boost.

The population of a settlement or the Kingdom as a whole is determined by the number of amenities the player has in that settlement of in the Kingdom Centre, the population refers to Workers, Units and Officials, the player must balance these three aspects of their Kingdom. Workers are used for constructing, maintaining, harvesting and repairing structures. The amount of workers that can work at a structure depends on what sort of structure it is and can vary from race to race. Units are the military units of the game and are necessary for the combat aspect of gameplay. Units can attack enemy units, buildings, workers and the very terrain to gain control, Units can be used to plunder structures allowing the player controlling the units to gain a small amount of one of the seven resources depending on the type of building plundered. In addition Units are able to convert enemy Workers to the player's side with the right conditions. Officials are individuals who collect resources and bring them back to the Settlement Center or Kingdom Center, in addition they can provide productivity increases to workers and units and can act as Spies and Generals if trained to be specialized in that manner.

Attack & Defence

Attack is the primary stat behind physical damage output by the user's units and buildings it is not tied to attack rate however. Defence is the primary stat behind a unit or building's ability to resist damage although is not connected to the Critical Resistance chance. Both stats have a greater impact on buildings than on units as units have additional stats that impact them on an individual level whilst buildings are universal in their stats. The degredation of Attack & Defence of Units to Territory Controlled is much more influential on High Stat Leaders of these two stats whilst Low Stat Leaders of Attack and Defence will barely notice a difference in their unit's ability to fight.

Health AT

Health

Health is directly tied to the amount of health a unit or structure has, Health has many additional factors that influence a unit or building's total health and therefore has less impact than Attack or Defence on either its units or buildings. Health does however influence Healing Rate and also impacts the power of Influence along with Magicka, a user with High Health will gain territory more quickly than one with Low Health.

Magicka AT

Magicka

Magicka is the stat that determines the intensity of which buffs and de-buffs are inflicted for the leader, a high Magicka will grant bonuses to particular building and unit effects as well as gain extra bonuses out of natural bonuses. Magicka is also tied to Territory Control like Health and has the same growth rate influence as Health. Magicka also has an impact on the Random effects, these include; Critical Hit Ratio, Critical Resistance, Frugality and general start bias.

Speed AT

Speed

Speed is tied to the movement speed of Units, Workers and Officials it also impacts the Attack Rate of units and buildings as well as construction time towards new buildings. Speed has an inverse effect on Territory Control as higher speed results in slower Territory expansion however does bolster Territory growth giving the individual a greater resistance to losing territory.

Production ATGather AT

Production & Gather

Production and Gather are fundamental to the acquisition of resources and are both critical to the ability to quickly create a sizeable army or defensive wall. Production influences the construction time on buildings as well as the harvest size of natural resources, it does not impact Wealth or Knowledge in any regard and has less effect on Essence than it does on other Resources. Gathering is the speed at which workers and officials gather and transport resources, in addition it impacts the Critical Gather chance with a high Gather giving a decent chance at a Critical Gather occuring to significantly boost the supply of that resource.

Wealth ATKnowledge AT

Wealth & Knowledge

Wealth and Knowledge are important stats towards specific resources (Gold and Knowledge respectively) as well as having additional benefits primarily around the ability to upgrade units and buildings as well as construct them. Wealth directly has an impact on the acquisition of Gold whilst Knowledge directly impacts the acquisition of Knowledge. Wealth impacts the ability to buy new units as well as buy materials on the market, high Wealth Stats will allow for reduced prices in the Market as well as the cost of constructing new units and buildings to be reduced. Knowledge is directly linked to the player's ability to research new technologies and a higher Knowledge Stat will allow for faster research into these new technologies as well as making it cheaper to implement the upgrades into buildings and units.
