A 1-Up Mushroom is a moderately rare type of Mushroom in the Mario franchise. It gives an extra life to the character that collects it, giving another chance before a game over. There are various ways to get 1-Up Mushrooms, mostly from ? Blocks or Hidden Blocks, but more situational ways exist such as jumping on eight Para-Beetles in a row.

Description[]

The 1-Up Mushroom is a mushroom that has a green cap with white spots, a white stem, and black eyes. It uses the Super Mushroom's design with the red areas replaced with green.

Replacements[]

As Super Mario games drift from the traditional lives system, there are entries where the 1-Up Mushroom has been replaced or is absent entirely.

In Super Mario Run, the player stars each course with two bubbles that float the character backwards in case of emergency.

Super Mario Odyssey and Bowser's Fury eschew limited lives, instead causing Mario to lose coins when he depletes his health. A rare item, the Lucky Bell, is granted in Bowser's Fury for some actions that would grant an extra life in other games.

Appearances[]

1-Up Mushrooms appear in SMWWii, along with the brand new type called the 1-Down Mushroom, which takes it's user's life away without killing it.

It revives one previously defeated character, which can be handy for reviving powerful characters that met an unfortunate end.

New Super Mario Bros.: Revenge of the Bros.[]

1-Up Mushrooms are seen yet again in New Super Mario Bros.: Revenge of the Bros., in this game, they once again give players extra lives. A total of 100 lives can be earned by a player. The 5-Up Mushroom, a stronger varitey of the 1-Up Mushroom is also seen in later levels. One level of Omega City also contains a stash of 1-Up Mushrooms in one of the small rooms in the pub area.
