"new" Super Mario Maker (formerly known as Super Mario Maker For Nintendo 3DS) is a Game creator application for the Nintendo 3DS. It was released in December 2016 and it is a port of the Wii U game Super Mario Maker. Unlike the Wii U version. The game uses assests from the handheld platforming Mario games, Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins for the Nintendo Gameboy, New Super Mario Bros for the Nintendo DS and New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the Nintendo 3DS.
Changes and New Features[]
Gameplay in "new" Super Mario Maker is almost the same as its Wii U counterpart, but with several differences. One, the game uses the assets from all the handheld instalments, discounting the Advance series, and Super Mario Bros Deluxe for the Gameboy Color. Two, the bottom screen is used to edit levels by using the stylus and the top screen is used to play levels the player has created. And three, Mystery Mushrooms and Big Mushrooms have different abilities than the ones in the Wii U version.

Mario VS Luigi Mode[]
Returning from New Super Mario Bros. Mario and Luigi compete for a number of big stars. Those stars will appear at random in the side-scrolling stages. The end of each of those stages is their beginning (the stages are looped). When Mario or Luigi are hit by enemies, fall down or hit each other, they lose a star, which can then be again collected by any of the brothers. The first brother to reach the previously set amount of stars wins the game. When a brother collects eight coins, a random power up will appear (Mushroom, Fire Flower, Blue Shell, Mini Mushroom, Mega Mushroom, Super Star). When a brother has a certain amount of victories, he wins the match.
Coin Rush Mode[]
Returning from New Super Mario Bros. 2 is Coin Rush mode, a time attack-esque mode that challenges the player to collect as many coins as they can in three randomly selected single-player levels without losing a life. In multiplayer mode, two players either Mario or Luigi must race to the end and collect the most coins they can throughout the level.
The Mushroom Pack selects three levels from Story Mode, the Flower Pack chooses levels that the player him/herself has created and crafted. and the Star Pack chooses levels from an online service. Ten downloadable course packs are also available for purchase in the in-game store, also accessible in this mode, which allows the player to play three custom-created courses.
