Paper Mario: The Final Act is the fifth title in the esteemed Paper Mario series. Developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo, the game promises a return to the turn-based strategy roots of the original Paper Mario and it's sequel, The Thousand-Year Door.

Characters[]

  • Mario
I can hardly believe this... I've always wanted to meet you, and here you are. I have some questions. Why is a plumber always saving the princess? Isn't there a royal guard?
— Goomben
Mario is the most obvious protagonist for a game with his name in it. Once again, players will be able to interact with the overworld and do battle with enemies using Mario's Jump and Hammer. Just like in previous Paper Mario games, Mario will also be accompanied by several partners from various locations and walks of life. In this adventure, Mario is out to collect several unusual artifacts called Seal Tablets to stop a new villain known as Finalos from wiping out the entire Mushroom Kingdom and building a tyrannical empire of chaos on it's ruins.
  • Luigi
You're Luigi, right? A pleasure to meet you, I guess... I'm Tawnee. If the stories are true, then no doubt we can help each other.
— Tawnee
In Mario's story, Luigi only plays a small role at the start - when Parakarry drops through the ceiling, he takes it upon himself to nurse the Paratroopa back to health. However, Luigi will get his own story after the player completes the game with Mario. This story consists of a unique set of partners and more powerful enemies. In this story, the younger bro finds himself sleepwalking and causing chaos. Fearing a return of Mr. L, he sets off to collect eight Soul Crystals to wipe the darkness of the Chaos Heart from his body once and for all.
  • Finalos
This taste... is this fresh air? Have I been released at last? ... Hm. Things certainly have changed around here... No matter. It will all be wasteland in the end, anyway.
— Finalos
The main antagonist of the game. Finalos was once hero of the Mushroom Kingdom, but when he faced an evil he couldn't defeat on his own, he released a powerful dark force from an ancient artifact and used it to defeat his enemy. He was corrupted by the dark force, and his partners gave their lives to seal him away. Bowser accidentally revives Finalos during a feud with Mario, but the two end up in a battle that results in the Koopa teaming up with Mario.
  • Mr. L
Well, look who's back! The Green Twerp! Bro, you know I'm the superior, so just... give up your body, bro! I promise I won't trash the kingdom... Much!
— Mr. L
Luigi's dark alter ego, created by Nastasia and harnessed by Dimentio. The essence of the Chaos Heart implanted Mr. L's personality and dark power into Luigi, and it laid dormant until the dark power of Finalos caused it to stir. Luigi is able to use Mr. L's talent and dark power, but the fiend is endeavoring to break free and take control of Luigi's body. Fearing Mr. L's revenge, Luigi embarks on a journey of his own to wipe out Mr. L for good.
  • Lady Saluta
Yes, Finalos was such a daring hero in those days! But he was so easily tempted by the darkness... I am so sorry, for I was the one who trusted him with that power...
— Lady Saluta
Princess Peach's distant and questionable ancestor who ruled during Finalos's era. Haunted by the incident that destroyed her kingdom, she remained on the plane of the living as a ghost long after her death at an early age. Though she comes off as an ally at first, it is soon revealed that she is the villain that Finalos faced, and that she has been manipulating the heroes the whole time in an attempt to orchestrate her revival.
  • Princess Peach
M-Mario! Have you come to save me from Bowser already? As prompt as always! I think this might set a new record on the time it takes to save me...
— Princess Peach
The princess of the Mushroom Kingdom - a kind and protective monarch who is loved and respected by her people. Unfortunately, she tends to be a target for every kidnapper ever who seeks to aggrieve and/or conquer the known world. Mario always manages to find a way to save her and said world, though, so no harm done!
  • Bowser
MARIOOO!! How many times are we gonna do this?! You should take a day off - let me keep the Princess for at least a day, maybe let me set up some cool levels for you to play...
— Bowser
The tyrannical Koopa King, a villainous fire-breathing turtle, and Peach's #1 fan and/or kidnapper. He, Mario, and Peach have been caught in their love triangle and cycle of battling since their very first adventure in 1981. This time, though, Bowser finds himself working with Mario to put down rival villain Finalos.
  • Sir Grodus
In the event of that "Mario" foiling our plans, we equipped the base with a machine that would lock on to and revive any fading dark power of great intensity.
— Sir Grodus
The old X-Naut commander from the Shadow Queen incident a few years back. During the Final Story, it is revealed that he and the Shadow Sirens (prior to their betrayal, that is) were building a machine in the old base with which to revive the Shadow Queen in the event of her demise.
  • Merlon
The items that you search are called Seal Tablets. They contain powerful dark magic, true, but gather them all, and you should be able to absorb Finalos's power and render him vulnerable!
— Merlon
A wise magician who wanders the land in search of enchanted artifacts and long-lost spells. It's through these adventures that he learns of the Seal Tablets - fragments of an ancient artifact that held an evil power at bay until Finalos absorbed it's power to defeat his strongest enemy - and the Soul Crystals - rare minerals that hold sway over the personalities and fabric of the universe itself.
  • Merlica
Good day to ya, sir! Uncle Merlon just gave me some new Badges, and I wanna test my salesmanship, so... Got any Corona Souls on hand?
— Merlica
Merlon's niece and apprentice, who runs a badge shop in her spare time. She exchanges Badges for Corona Souls. Her eager and informal attitude makes her a strange shopkeeper.

Story[]

Mario's Act[]

Prologue: Taking The Stage Again![]
That's Pepper - she's one of Bowser's Koopa Troopa minions. From what I hear, she's an elite among the ranks of the Koopa Troop. She's also incredibly headstrong and impossible to get along with. Max HP is 8, and Attack is 1. Mario, do you really need my advice on how to fight her? She's a Koopa! Just stomp on her a couple of times, and we'll be able to leave this place!
— Goomben's Tattle on Pepper
Chapter I: When Flowers And Weeds Attack![]
The Lord of the Kooperl civilization... At least now we know how his city was destroyed - the artifact must have created those Darkweeds! Let's call this big boss Darkweed the, uh... Darkweed Lord! Max HP is 20, Attack is 5, and Defense is 1. So it looks like they have control of the Lord... You know the drill when it comes to Darkweed - hit 'em with fire to nullify their defenses, then take 'em out! Just watch out - this guy has some tough magic up his shell!
— Goomben's Tattle on the Darkweed Lord
Chapter II: Dreams Of Green And Adventure![]
Urk! ... Gasp... Sorry. I knew this guy before he left my old school... NOT a nice dude, as you may be aware... Anyway, this is Knubba's "Brawny" form. Max HP is 20, and Attack is 3. It seems very focused on offense, so try to use that to your advantage - hit it where it's weakest!
— Goomben's Tattle on Brawny Knubba
The Black Bandit - named for his clothing, which is pitch black. This guy uses the Seal Tablet's magic to do all sorts of nasty stuff in battle. Max HP is 15, and Attack is 2. This guy will do anything, from cloning to boosting evasion to even making his partner invincible. Try to stun him!
— Goomben's Tattle on Black Bandit
Chapter III: Revival Of The Masked Bob-omb![]
T-that ghostly Bob-omb's taken a draconic form?! What's he thinking?! Well, uh... This is Blastail. See what I did there? Blast-Tail? Tail? Like all those dragons you... you know what, forget it. You know the joke. Max HP is 35, and Attack is 4. He's spent all these years with only a Seal Tablet as company, so definitely expect reckless attacks and patternless techniques... And exploding. Honestly, I don't even know why I'm bothering to tell you that he explodes.
— Goomben's Tattle on Blastail
Chapter IV: A Frigid And Flaming Mountain![]
The legendary guardian of the chamber, the Magma Golem! And it looks like it isn't going down without a fight! He's huge, he's hot as heck, but he's just another golem! We've fought plenty already! Max HP is 40, Attack is 4, and Defense is 1. Take advantage of the elements, I say - hit him with some ice-element attacks! But seriously, though... how are we going to save Droughtrise AND hold onto the Seal Tablet? ... We'll think about it later.
— Goomben's Tattle on the Magma Golem
Chapter V: The Stories Of The Departed![]
That's Prince's ultimate form, the Karma Baron. Should've expected an ego that big to come up with a form even bigger. ...Nah, I take that back - there's no way this is bigger than his ego. Max HP is 50, Attack is 3, and Defense is 1. According to legend, a royal Boo who is cursed gains the power of that curse, transforming him into a Karma Baron. It's unsafe to touch a Karma Baron directly, but if you have a tool or magic powers, it's safe.
— Goomben's Tattle on the Karma Baron
Chapter VI: Stormy Days On Isle Toropi![]
That's the Epsilon Beam Cannon - a machine capable of destroying an entire island, given enough time to charge. Seeing as we're a lot smaller than an island, we might want to take it out quickly. Max HP is 40, Attack is 5, and Defense is... freaking unlisted. Great. Taking on a cannon sounds like suicide, sure, but remember, this is a machine we're dealing with! I know machines pretty well, and they usually have serious weaknesses. Maybe if we use the right attack...
— Goomben's Tattle on the Epsilon Beam Cannon
Chapter VII: A Blast From The Past![]
That's the reigning lord of World -1, King Beep. A Blooper with a heart as black as ink. I just wish he'd get out of our way so that we can get that Seal Tablet and leave his freakin' kingdom!! Max HP is 50, Attack is 5, and Defense is 1. I still can't get over how big of a jerk this guy is. Even looking at that silly crown makes me angry! I just wish we could knock it off of his head - that would definitely get him peeved! (Plus, then you could jump on him.)
— Goomben's Tattle on King Beep
Chapter VIII: Return To The Koopa's Keep![]
Poor Bowser - looks like he's been transformed into the monstrous Giga Bowser. Kinda makes me feel sorry for him, if it weren't for the fact that he was hiding the last Seal Tablet from us this whole time. Max HP is 60, Attack is 6, and Defense is 2. You've fought Bowser before, Mario, but never like this. He has all of the elements at his fingertips, and his attack power is almost unmatched. Well, at least it's a good warmup before Finalos. Let's rescue Bowser!
— Goomben's Tattle on Giga Bowser
Epilogue: The Fall Of Curtain And Kingdom![]
I can't believe it - we're finally up against Finalos! Oh, jeez... I think I'm... *gasp* hyperventilating! Too much stress! But... W-we've gone through so much! We can't lose, not with the Seal Tablets! Max HP is 80, Attack is 6, and Defense is 1. This guy is an experienced hero, so expect him to have some wicked moves hidden up his cloak. ... I'd say more, but this guy's aura is messing with my Goomtop. You're on your own, Mario, but... I believe in you! Good luck!
— Goomben's Tattle on Finalos

Partners[]

Partners in this game cannot be upgraded, and instead level up when Mario levels up. Each partner has four basic attacks - two starting attacks, and two attacks obtained with their Sleeping Abilities - and can learn more by equipping certain Badges. For example, Goomben starts off with Headbonk and Tattle, learns Data Wall and Data Fang upon unlocking his Sleeping Ability, and can learn Multibonk and Rewire by equipping specific badges.

-
A nervous, sometimes even cowardly, Goomba whose lust for information will often outweigh these fears and cause him to act quite rashly. His insight transcends the knowledge in his head, as he carries with him the latest in the Goomtop portable laptop series. Of course, these odd habits often end in him getting bullied, but hopefully being with Mario will help him overcome his nervous nature.
-
Goomben is much paler than an average Goomba, practically peanut-colored. He has a bit of neatly-cut sandy hair and freckles. His teeth, like Goombario's, are square. His clothing includes a laptop bag slung over one shoulder and a pair of circular glasses. He has a few buttons with catchy slogans pinned to the shoulder strap of his bag.

Her family has been serving Bowser's family for generations and generations, and her scarf is a sign of her ancient and even legendary lineage. She represents Bowser's army during the struggle against Finalos, and her aggressive nature towards allies and enemies alike helps to reinforce this idea.
-
Pepper is a Koopa with a red shell and dark crimson hair, either cut short or in a ponytail. She's a tiny bit more tanned than the average Koopa, but it's only noticeable when compared to a standard Koopa's skin color. Her boots are black. A quiet Yoshi who doesn't seem too acquainted with Mario, although she's quite the avid fan of Luigi. She tends to keep to herself and hates attention, which makes being an experienced cross-country runner rather difficult for her. She is sent on the adventure by her friends with hopes that she'll learn to open up a little and realize that the world is a radical place to be.
-
Midori is a chocolate-brown Yoshi. She has dark shoes and a caramel-colored shell. She's generally dressed in dark jeans and a pullover hoodie with an insignia depicting a bored-looking emoticon playing a video game.

Sack
Chapter III (M)
HP = 10
FP = 5
Attack = 2
Defense = 0
-
A surprisingly optimistic Bob-omb child who was injured horribly during a thunderstorm. His pseudonym is inspired by the paper bag that he wears over his head to hide his injuries. Being rather young and naive, he is infatuated with Mario, and travels with him to achieve his lifelong passion for becoming a hero. (That might also be why he wears the mask and calls himself Sack.)
-
Sack is a Bob-omb with a paper bag over his head, hence his nickname. His key is rusted, with a few flecks of baby blue paint. His fuse his unwound and singed. His shoes, which are electric blue sneakers, are visible just below the bag.

A shopkeeper from Droughtrise Town. Her shop deals in odd medicines and souvenirs. She, along with a few others, caught the Lavagulp Flu. Her mutated variant of the disease, though not spreading, seems incurable. Believing that she has become an outcast among her friends (which she really isn't, after saving them all), she joins Mario to remember what it's like to not have a constant flu.
-
Lumi is an indigo Lava Bubble with a reddened spot where her nose would be, as well as a rather obvious runny nose. Her eyes (white) are slanted outwards rather than inwards. She also wears a blue bandana on her head, in the style of Pokemon's May.

Attack = 2

-
A strange Boo who, despite being a self-proclaimed cool kid and completely blind, greatly enjoys reading. He has mastered echolocation after a year of unbearable training with dolphins... or so he claims. But seeing as he's lived in a haunted mansion, far away from any body of water, for most of his life, it's easy to see why people call this story farfetched...
-
Gaston is a sandy-colored Boo. He wears a pair of sunglasses with orange half-rims. He wears said sunglasses on the tip of his nose, revealing milky white eyes. He also occasionally wears a pair of black and orange headphones. He carries a leather-bound tome with yellowing pages.

-
An insane Lakitu with an unhealthy obsession with getting the Seal Tablets. She is reluctant to share her history, other than that she has been anticipating Finalos' return for a very nonspecific amount of time. She is gloomy, realistic in outlook, and easily humored by the suffering of others. She is otherwise an airborne enigma who travels with Mario simply for giggles and destruction.
-
Drizzelle is a darkly-colored Lakitu atop a storm-black Cloud. Her shell is a royal purple color. Her eyes are covered by a large black hood. Her black hair, dyed purple at the ends, is worn semi-long and is unevenly cut. Despite her gloomy color scheme, however, a mad smile is on her face.

-
A quiet Tanoomba, the last one of the ancient bloodline of Lycanturf Woods, who befriends Luigi after learning about how he, too, has made himself an outcast due to his potential. She can use her transforming abilities to replicate nearly any item, object, or person - even enemies from Tattle Logs! It takes lots of practice for her to master these abilities, though...
-
Tawnee is a slightly darker color than average Tanoombas, with her "mask" being lighter than the rest of her head. She has long and wild brown hair, and the leaf on her head is orange. She wears a black bandana around her neck.

A quirky and extremely giggly Phanto who loves watching people go about their meaningless mortal lives and inevitably meeting the darkness of death that always awaits them at the end. Other than that, she's a nice young lady. She has a passionate love of PUNishingly horrible jokes, incredibly ancient artwork, and eavesdropping on peoples' nightmares.
-

A reticent Koopatrol elite and the captain of Bowser's Division 16. He cares deeply for his younger sister Pepper, even if he doesn't directly state it, and hopes that she and her companions amount to great things in their lives. He tackles his duties as a Koopatrol with a somber attitude, and often listens to calming orchestral music in order to lift his spirits.
-
Lance is a Koopatrol. What skin can be seen through his armor (lower jaw, tail, arms) is far paler than an average Koopa's. His armor is more bronze and maroon than silver and black. His shell is maroon, and fairly cracked. He has no spike on his helm.

FP = 5
Attack = 3
Defense = 1
-
Eclair's loyal pet, crime-fighting companion, and best friend (second to Midori). He is friendly and lovable, but easily distracted and not fully aware of his own power. It's strange how easily Eclair can control him! If only she could fight alongside him in combat! Unfortunately, that isn't how this game works, and you're stuck fighting with only one of the two. What a shame!
-
Rufus is a Chain Chomp of an ultramarine color. He's much smaller than an average Chain Chomp, there is a spiked collar at the side of the chain connected to his body, and his chain ends in a ring-like handle. He also moves around a bit more, but he is otherwise an ordinary Chain Chomp.

HP = 10
FP = 15

Defense = 0
-
Better known as the Musical Burglar, Banjo is well-known among even the greatest of thieves for his acrobatic abilities, which leave the coppers stumped every time. He tends to rebel against "the man," whomever he may be, whenever possible, which leads to interesting situations where he is rebelling against somebody who he originally joined because they, too, were rebelling against someone.
-
Banjo is a Bandit dressed in heavily-patched brown clothes. A classic X of band-aids is under one of his eyes, and wears a tool belt equipped with lockpicks, screwdrivers, and other miscellaneous tools. His namesake banjo, a rather beaten-up instrument, is slung over his shoulder.

She also enjoys playing Tale of Hilda - Harmonica of Space, and exploring ancient ruins in hopes of replicating the adventurous feelings that she gets from playing the previously mentioned game.
-
Penny is a pale gray Blooper. She's dressed in an oversized black t-shirt with a NES controller emblazoned on the front. Her arms and patches of her t-shirt are stained with square-shaped blotches of ink, like pixel art. She also wears a pair of round orange-tinted glasses and red-and gray-headphones.

Chapter II (F)
HP = 10
FP = 15
Attack = 2
Defense = 0
-
A Bitbit who was captured and experimented on during the last days of the X-Nauts' reign of terror. His sleeping powers to control the flow of time and objects within space has been awakened through these experiments, as well as some incredibly serious trust issues and a large quantity of vengeance towards those who turned him into the freak that he is now.
-
Fuzeon is a floating spherical creature with an odd device strapped to his back, with several wires connecting him to it by his forehead and sides. He's colored black, and his sole features - his candy red eyes - are slanted inwards, suggesting hostility.
-
St. Ability: Telekinesis
Sl. Ability: Pause
Toss
0 FP
Strike a single enemy with a prop, thrown with telekinesis.
Psych Fling
3 FP
Completely rearrange the order of all enemies.
Decelerate
3 FP
Slow time during all Action Commands for a few turns.
Accelerate
3 FP
Allow Mario to move a second time.

Note: All stats are taken from a Lv 1 Partner. Partners that join the party will be at the current level of the party.

Note: "Attack" is measured as the total amount of damage that can be inflicted when an Action Command is used for the character's standard move.

Note: The term "Mario" does not specifically mean that only Mario will be affected. While playing as Luigi, this term will be replaced by the name of Luigi, and the effects of the move will apply to Luigi.

Trivia[]

  • Pepper was originally going to be a Fire Bro met in the Endless Wastes, and be focused solely around the Fire element from the start. Instead of Pepper, the Koopa partner would be a Dry Bones partner named Skelly.
  • The concept for Sack was actually created by Monstermanchego's brother, and it was set apart from all other ideas recieved from him due to Sack's depth of backstory and personality.
    • A prototype for the Bob-omb character, a stubborn but cheerful Bob-omb lass named Dayna Myte (referred to simply as Dayna) was never considered for The Final Act, but appears in a collab between Monstermanchego and GamingDylan - Paper Mario: Book of Awakening.
  • Goomben's names during concept development were Goombert, and later Googene, before Monstermanchego finally settled on Goomben.
    • Goombert was scrapped when Monstermanchego learned that practically half of the internet used the name.
    • Googene was scrapped simply because it sounds dumb.
  • Partners from previous games can be taken on in a Pit-of-100-Trials-esque fight until you fall battle royal at the Trial of Memories. Naturally, these ex-partners are extremely difficult to defeat, even after completing Luigi's Story, and yield incredibly powerful rewards.
    • Characters from Paper Mario include Goombario, Kooper, Bombette, Bow, Parakarry, Watt, Sushie, and Lakilester. Defeating them all will be rewarded with the Flower Star Badge, which negates all FP costs.
    • Characters from The Thousand-Year Door include Goombella, Koops, Flurrie, Yoshi (referred to as Kid), Vivian, Bobbery, and Ms. Mowz. Defeating them all will be rewarded with the Shadow Crown Badge, which significantly boosts the whole party's Attack.
    • Characters from The Waffle Kingdom Quest include Blooey, Jerry, Torque, Hayzee, and Screamy. Defeating them all will be rewarded with the Waffle's Compass Badge, which grants Luigi use of the devastating Special attack called Last Wish.
  • For those of you who aren't awesome enough to understand, Tale of Hilda - Harmonica of Space, Penny's favorite game, is a parody of the well-acclaimed Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time.
  • Rufus was originally named "Bark".
  • It took Monstermanchego bucketloads of time to come up with Fuzeon.
    • Fuzeon isn't exactly the best partner, but he's still pretty neat, in Monstermanchego's opinion.

Thanks to Simpson55 for the logo. You've got talent, man.

Most puzzle pieces lying within this article's Source (table, etc.) was altered from Sources found on Truckmun's Paper Mario fangame. Please check it out - seriously, it flipping rocks compared to mine.

Huge thanks to Apallo for some freaking epic ideas... Like the idea for the Luigi's Story mode, for example.

Rufus's original name was created by Apallo, but Dylan suggested the current name, so props to him for that. Also, Penny was inspired partially by Dylan's Blooper partner. What a coincidence.

Thanks to my brother (he doesn't go on this wiki) for the concept for Sack - quite possibly the most unique in the group.

And the biggest of thanks to all of you Wiki people who decided to read through all of this! Seriously, guys! You rock! ... And no, I'm not being sarcastic! You know how much dedication to read through that much in our modern day and age, when people are skimming even comic books and CoD instruction manuals? A FLIPPIN' TON. So again, thank you, all of you, for not being total losers like the neurotypical barbarians.

...

No offense meant if you're a neurotypical barbarian, by the way.
